R1bn from Government not Received and Thousands remain Displaced

According to various reports, about 40 000 South Africans remain displaced across KZN following the devastating floods that hit the province in April this year and claimed the lives of over 400 people. The province and its people are taking tremendous strain as the R1bn relief aid promised by President Cyril Ramaphosa has not been released. There is no clear indication as to when these funds will be made available much to the detriment of those who remain affected.

ActionSA cannot rely on unverified figures and will therefore revisit community halls that are currently housing displaced people around the province to ascertain living conditions and to assess if relief aid is reaching them adequately. As ActionSA we want to find out how many people remain displaced and how long it will take for them to be provided with temporary and ultimately permanent shelter. The resettlement process requires timelines as this is in line with the restoration of dignity to those who have been affected by the disaster and have no means to self-sustain.

ActionSA KZN Chairperson Musa Kubheka will personally be on the ground interacting with affected communities and continuing to provide relief aid as has been the case since the beginning of the disaster. The Chairperson will also write a letter to KZN Premier Sihle Zikalala to inquire about the national relief aid and when the people of this province can expect government intervention as it is urgently needed.
