SA can relive the magic of the Springboks’ victory every day

It was a rare moment of unity in a country often divided by our many economic and social divides.

My Fellow South African,

This past weekend South Africans of all races, across the country, came together to watch and then celebrate the Springboks’ victory at the Rugby World Cup in Paris. Like many, I also spent Sunday morning looking at social media with pride at what our nation has achieved.

It was a rare moment of unity in a country often divided by our many economic and social divides. And it was a rare moment of pride for South Africans who have so often been let down by load shedding, joblessness, crime and corrupt politicians.

Indeed, the Springboks showed the best of us. They showed what is possible when people from diverse backgrounds work together to achieve a common goal. They showed South African excellence and displayed how – even when faced with adversity – we show the character of our convictions.

In many ways, they represent the dream of an ideal South African that the drafters of our democratic constitution must have believed in; of what is possible when we address the harmful legacy of our past to work together for a greater good.

Unfortunately, however, the possibility of South Africa which the Springboks so beautifully displayed over the weekend is often forgotten when our nation is faced with so many obstacles.

When women fear walking in our streets, or a young person battle to find a job, our borders are porous, compromising the sovereignty of our country, it is difficult to keep hoping in the future. When the lights or water keeps on going off, there are potholes in our streets, and the price of food keeps increasing, it’s difficult to believe that there is a possibility left in South Africa.

After 30 years of democracy, many have lost hope in the possibility of South Africa.

But, I am here today to remind you that a better South Africa is possible. We don’t have to wait another four years for the next Rugby World Cup to rally around the Springboks to deliver us hope for the future.

Instead, we can hope and believe today that South Africa’s best days are ahead of us. In the next coming few weeks, we can mobilise the 14 million unregistered South Africans to register to vote next year.

And next year we can vote for a political party that will put the needs of South Africans first. A political party that will restore the rule of law, grow the economy and create thousands of good jobs.

A political party that will not exploit our differences, but unite our people: who will start to cross the so many bridges that divide us, and build a unified and inclusive future.

Next year we can vote for hope. Let us today commit to not allowing the Springboks magic to be a once-off event, but allow it to inspire us to work towards a better tomorrow.

Yours in service,

Herman Mashaba
