ActionSA is horrified by reports regarding the procurement and donation of 20 donkey carts by the Department of Community Safety and Road Management in Mahikeng, North-West Province.
By the President’s own admission, since 2018 the situation has worsened. SAPS data shows that sexual offences and rape increased by 13% between 2017/18 and 2021/22, while between the first quarter of 2021 and the first quarter of 2022 there was a 52% increase in the murder of women, and a 46% increase in child murders.
ActionSA’s legal team is preparing legal action against the eThekwini Metro for failing to urgently arrest the flow of effluent and waste into the river systems and oceans in the city, which has resulted in the closure of beaches, health concerns for residents and the long-term damage to sensitive ecosystems.
ActionSA in particular is seized by the urgency of coming to a determination on this matter. Allegations of this nature are extraordinarily serious and organisations have a duty to ensure that findings are made, and where it is found necessary, the appropriate steps are taken.
The DA confirmed that Mayor Williams would refer himself to the Speaker, and ActionSA has committed to lodge its complaint with the Speaker simultaneously.
ActionSA has noted an alarming allegation relating to a directive alleged to have been issued by Mayor Mpho Phalatse directing the appointment of a particular service provider to investigate a senior manager in the City of Johannesburg.
